According to Owls manager Danny Röhl, a number of important players have contracts that expire at Hillsborough, and players have been informed that decisions regarding their contracts will be made and discussions held at the end of the season. Additionally, some player contracts contain clauses and triggers that could result in their deals being extended.

The likes of Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, Michael Smith, Michael Ihiekwe, Callum Paterson and Marvin Johnson are all understood to be nearing the end of their current deals, with a number of other players in a similar situation.

Speaking to The Star ahead of the Owls’ Good Friday match at Stoke City, Röhl said discussions had been had between him and the club over the direction Wednesday go. The summer is set to be an interesting one at S6 with the annual turnover of squad expected and speculation remaining over the German coach’s future.

When asked about the status of the current players’ contracts, Röhl responded: “On the one hand, I had meetings with the club, and Kevin and I talked about what is in my mind, what is the recommendation, and what the club should do in the summer, but it is also about ‘OK, what can we do?’?” There are two things to consider: what you should do and what you can do.

“In the next couple of weeks we are going to have to make decisions. We know where we are and of course we should then make these decisions. The time will come when we can speak about all these things.”
