He is currently 0–2 versus Charles Leclerc in the Grand Prix. Prior to both cars being disqualified, he also finished behind the Monégasque in China. However, he claimed pole position at the Shanghai International Circuit and went on to win a sprint race. As he struggles to adjust to the new Ferrari systems and characteristics after switching from Mercedes, Hamilton is also typically two tenths of a second slower than Leclerc in qualifying.

Hamilton disclosed that he had a serious issue with his car after finishing at Suzuka 13 seconds and three positions behind fourth-place Leclerc.
The seven-time Formula One champion said Ferrari is already working on an upgrade package for Bahrain to help with the issue, though he did not elaborate.
“I did the best I could, we are generally lacking performance compared to the cars ahead, the Mercedes, the McLaren and obviously the Red Bull,” Hamilton stated to Sky Sports F1.
“I sincerely hope that once we fix the issue that has been causing the car to perform poorly for the past three races, I will be able to achieve better results.

“But I’m losing a little more than a tenth every lap due to the problem we have, so I’m hoping it gets fixed for the next race. It goes without saying that qualifying is crucial, but something is wrong since I haven’t been able to get the most out of the tires.
“The crew is aware of it, but they are unsure of what caused it or why. Hopefully, it will be eliminated when the new part arrives and both cars will have the same issue.
“Considering that, I’m relatively happy with my race, considering what I had.”
