Tom Pett has agreed to a two-year contract with Oldham Athletic, calling it “a no-brainer” to remain with the team he earned promotion with.
After being released by Cheltenham Town, the midfield player, who played a key role in Latics’ victorious National League play-off campaign, signed a two-year contract at Boundary Park.
After joining Oldham on loan from the Robins in January, the 33-year-old made 24 appearances in all competitions, and manager Micky Mellon quickly made the deal permanent.
“Tom was a big influence for us when he came in last season. He brought real composure and intelligence into our midfield, and his attitude on and off the pitch was spot on,” said the Latics boss of his first summer signing.
“He’s a great lad who knows the group well, so when we had the chance to bring him here permanently it was one I knew we had to do.
“He knows what this level is about, and he’ll be an important part of the group as we look to keep progressing. We’re really pleased to have him back on board.”
And the feeling is mutual as Pett makes OL1 his permanent football home.
“I really enjoyed my time here last season. From the moment I arrived, I felt settled and part of something,” he explained.
“The dressing room has a great atmosphere, and the fans have been brilliant with me. It was an easy decision to come back.
“I think we can achieve great things together this season it’s a great place and really it was a no brainer to sign for another two years.
“I believe in what the manager and his staff are building here and I really want to be part of it.”
Hailing from Hertfordshire, Pett’s career started in non-league with Potters Bar Town and Wealdstone, with performances soon earning him a move into the professional football with Stevenage in 2014.
He established himself as a consistent and reliable figure in League Two, and caught the eye of Danny Crowley at Lincoln City, where he enjoyed one of the most successful spells of his career, winning the League Two title in 2018/19.
He had a second spell with Stevenage before joining Port Vale in 2021 and winning another promotion to League One, this time via the League Two play-offs alongside current Latics Tom Conlon, Kian Harratt and Harry Charsley.
